Being in process
We treat "still figuring it out" as a liability. What if it's the opposite?
In times of uncertainty, it's not fight or flight. When we start treating "being in process" as a possibility rather than a liability, we find the wonders of continuous self-evolution.
I know people who were so sure of themselves in their 20s, only to fall into a mid-life crisis in their 30s. Conversely, others only found their confidence in their 30s after spending their 20s feeling deeply insecure.
Who knows what transformations await in our 40s, 50s, 60s, and beyond?
At every moment, it feels painful. It is different from before. You don't know if you ever get out of it.
As we grow older, "being in process" feels more like a liability than a strength. There's this unspoken belief that by a certain age or career stage, we should have it all figured out. And if we haven't? People will quietly stop betting on us.
Yet, I've observed a pattern in both my personal journey and in coaching professionals: these periods of uncertainty aren't anomalies, they're essential inflection points that shape our growth.
The executive who questions her career path after achieving everything she thought she wanted. The entrepreneur who quietly gets tired of the thrills. The non-profit worker who feels detached from his impact.
The goal isn't to avoid these transitions, it's to develop a healthy relationship with this uncertain self.
Will you resist, denying its existence?
Will you rush to react, give in, justify, hoping it will disappear?
Or will you meet it with authenticity and bravery, allowing yourself the necessary moments to welcome, understand, and perhaps come to cherish this emerging dimension of who you are?
When we try to hide from our inner struggles, they don't disappear, they grow stronger in the darkness, eventually sucking away our confidence and drive.
But often when we let ourselves work through the rough patches, we gradually find unexpected gateways to possibility.
What feels like being lost today might actually be the crucial starting point of evolving into the person you've always hoped to be.
How have periods of uncertainty shaped your journey? What wisdom have you gained from navigating life's inevitable transitions?
